I have a rather crazy life and it often feels like there are simply not enough hours in the day to achieve all I wish to do. To help with child care, my hubby and I work different hours - I work day shifts Monday to Friday and he works many evenings/nights and day shifts on a weekend. We're like a tag team - I get home from work and he heads out the door!
In order to fit running in to this busy life of mine, I've had to be rather creative and I tend to run to and from work. Door to door, it's exactly a 3 mile journey. On a morning I tend to run anywhere between 3 and 10 miles (depending on when I can get out of bed, what I'm training for and whether there's a nice sky in order to take a good photo - yes, really) but on my way home, I tend to go straight home and do the simple 3 miles.
I much prefer running in the morning. Firstly, it wakes me up, but it also clears my head before the day ahead. The roads are much quieter too and I love having the streets of York to myself!
I tend to get up rather early and aim to get into work at around 7 am. There are usually a handful of people in the office at this time and these guys know me well and are used to seeing me arriving at the office in my running gear, all red and flustered!
I am very lucky in that there are good facilities at work - ie a shower! Early in the morning, as there's hardly anyone there, I get showered and think nothing of it.
However, if I'm running late (quite literally - usually due to sleeping in, exploring or taking too many photos) then I arrive at work later! I do not like this at all.
When you go to the gym, you all go there for the same reason - you work out, you get showered, you go home/to work. Normal. Simple.
When you go to work, you go to work, not to get showered!
Our shower is right next to the main internal door into our office. If I get to work later, there are more people about and it puts me on edge! My colleagues, all suited and booted, all looking extremely professional and heading into the office, are completely unaware that at the other side of the door/wall, I am stood there completely butt naked! The later I am, the busier the office gets and the more freaked out I get!
I tend to rush at this point, and going through my little head are all the possible scenarios which could occur - what if the fire alarm goes off? What if I slip and pull on the help cord by accident? What if someone doesn't realise butt naked Joni is in the shower and tries to open the door? Well, I'm sorry to say that if that fire alarm does go off then I would prefer to go down with the building then run out of the office with my modesty being covered by only a shower curtain!
Don't get me wrong, it's great to have these facilities at work and I really appreciate them but it's just a weird situation; not many people can say that they get naked in the middle of a law firm each morning - well no-one that I know anyway!
One final thing.....if anyone at work happens to read this, no, it would not be funny if you set off the fire alarm first thing in the morning so don't even think it!
