To The Lighthouse
Introducing the latest See York Run York virtual challenge, To the Lighthouse.
This challenges start on 1st August 2020.
The aim is to run, walk or cycle virtually from St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay to Flamborough Lighthouse, a total of 107 miles.
Starting on St Mary's Island in the north of Whitley Bay, you take in the sights of Whitley Bay before heading to the North Shields Ferry terminal to catch the ferry to South Shields. The route takes you south to Sunderland and then takes in the historic coalmining areas of Easington, Peterlee and Shotton. It's a southward journey all the way to Billingham and then into Middlesbrough crossing the River Tees at the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. A brief wave to the Riverside Stadium before entering the old county of Cleveland. As you pass Guisborough, don't be tempted to run up Roseberry Topping as you will need your energy for the final stretch of the journey. Run along the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park as you approach Whitby and then head south to Scarborough and Filey taking in part of the Cleveland Way. Stop in Filey for Fish and Chips or an ice-cream before the final few miles to Flamborough and then out onto the rugged cliff top to finish at Flamborough Lighthouse.
All finishers receive a beautiful, bespoke medal.
We have created a tracker for the challenge which will be e-mailed out to you at the end of July, ready for your start in August. You will need to track your own mileage and e-mail us once you have completed the mileage challenge. Emails must be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Upon receipt of your e-mail, your medal will be posted out to you.
You are welcome to make up the miles in whatever way suits you - you may run them, cycle them, do a mix of both, walk, do indoor miles, garden miles etc. The challenge is yours and the choice is yours too. All we ask is that you follow Government guidelines and keep safe.
We will also be inviting you to share your posts in our See York Run York Facebook chat group so we can see how you are getting on and all runners can give each other support and a bit of motivation.
There is no deadline to complete the challenge.
